About Jonathan Muecke

Jonathan Muecke reinterprets common designs to call attention to their individual qualities, definitions, and purposes. Born in Cody, Wyoming, Muecke received a degree in architecture from Iowa State University, followed by an internship with Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland. Now working from his studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Muecke confronts and reflects on common forms to inspire the viewer to question the objects’ universal meaning. “There’s something about them that makes perfect sense and something about them that doesn’t make any sense at all” he has said of his objects, which include Mass (2011)—an empty, cavernous black vessel coated with coal slag—and Frame (2011)—an enigmatic, three-dimensional construction of polished stainless steel.
