Jonathan Smith, ‘Rocks and Horizon, North Fork’, Ille Arts

About Jonathan Smith

Early in his career, Jonathan Smith was employed by Joel Meyerowitz as an archive manager to document the World Trade Center and Parks Department archives. This attention to urban landscapes and architecture persisted in Smith’s photography, which at times reads as urban documentation. His ongoing “East/West” project contrasts visual impressions of America’s two coastlines, while “The Bridge Project” is a collection featuring industrial architecture in New York. Smith also produces more narrative works: his series “Untold Stories”, for example, features interior spaces, only occasionally including figures, that are captured in cinematic framing and dramatic lighting. His aesthetic throughout these works is characterized by the use of vivid colors and a careful attention to light and shadow.
