Jonathan Waters uses sculpture as a form of drawing in space. The Connecticut-based artist, who got his start in New York among the likes of Minimalists Carl Andre and Richard Serra, creates freestanding works and wall objects from slabs of steel and wood, and materials like lead and coal. The works, many in a dark palette that calls to mind the charred sculptural remnants of a fire, change within the space as the viewer moves around them. “There's something about the shift between the two- and three-dimensional that I can't let go of,” Waters has said. “To me, there's a special relationship, and I want to make that, play with that. Like, what's that doorway and what's on the other side?”
