Jet Airliner #48, Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200

Josef Hoflehner's 'Jet Airliner' pictures were taken at Maho Beach, on the Dutch/French Caribbean island of St Maarten/St Martin, from 2009 to 2011. The beach is adjacent to the short runway of the Princess Juliana International Airport, and passenger jets fly as low as four metres above the heads of sunbathers. In 2011, the runway was lengthened, but to comply with civil aviation rules a 'safety zone' may be required on the Maho side, which would mean the end for one of the most spectacular beaches in the world

Josef Hoflehner (born 1955) is an Austrian photographer known for his black-and-white landscape images. He was voted Nature Photographer of the Year 2007, and his photographs are regularly exhibited in New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, London and other world cities. He is also well known for his "Jet Airliner" project.

About Josef Hoflehner

Josef Hoflehner’s photographs of cities and landscapes are filled with silence and solitude. Working mostly in black-and-white, he emphasizes the relationship between the natural and the man-made, placing figures or physical traces of human presence against vast, sometimes eerie emptiness. Impeccable composition and rhythmic play of light and dark give his work a painterly, highly formal quality. “I like empty spaces,” Hoflehner has said. “I prefer bad weather. I love snow and ice … and trees. I mix up or change my style often. I like to experiment with focus and time.”
