Fairfield Porter once described the paintings of Joseph Fiore as focusing “on a fragment of Nature’s whole” and “embodying a form of modesty.” Fiore, who trained and then later taught at Black Mountain College, is known for his abstractions, urban views, and landscapes. Both his representational and abstract paintings were composed in planes of color, and had a translucence Fiore achieved by thinning his pigments and rubbing the canvas surfaces. Fiore was also an adept draftsman in many styles and mediums. Willem de Kooning and Josef Albers were major influences in Fiore’s formative years; the artist also studied with John Cage, Ilya Bolotowsky, and Jean Varda.
