About Josette Urso
Josette Urso’s paintings, collages, and drawings address a range of the artist’s preoccupations. Her paintings, made “directly and urgently from life,” explore qualities of Urso’s immediate surroundings both in and out of doors, conflating distant and proximate views such that space becomes indeterminate. Urso’s paintings feature muted palettes, free-flowing abstract forms, and gestural brushwork that spans from delicate to vigorous. Her collages, on the other hand, are “preoccupied with the problem of information; or its dual nature as nourishment and interference.” These works draw upon the generative power of chaos and order by featuring large quantities of found images, arranged into geometric structures. Her drawings are linear renderings of urban environments, in which light and perspective are skewed.
