About Josh Azzarella

Born in Ohio and now based in New York City, photographer and videographer Josh Azzarella creates historically minded works that force unsettling questions. His photographs of Iraqi prisoners of war, for instance, are edited so that the scene’s animating activity or feature—a gun, a body—are removed. What’s left is a disquieting and boldly incomplete image. Clocking in at 120 hours, Azzarella’s 2011 film based on a small clip from The Wizard of Oz is one of the longest experimental films ever made. He has exhibited across the country, and has works in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
