Joshua Abelow makes paintings and drawings that look satirically at his own career and practice. Abelow is known for using simple-though-loaded imagery: his two most common motifs are geometric forms and stick figures, which are references to Modernist abstraction. His paintings, typically executed on linen or stretched burlap, also demonstrate Abelow’s deft understanding of color. In contrast to the rigid forms of his paintings, Abelow’s drawings are comprised of loosely rendered images, which Abelow sometimes considers a foil to and a release from his painting process.
