About Jowhara Alsaud

Jowhara AlSaud manipulates her photographs with drawing and etching in a process that explores both the impressionability of her medium and the cultural landscape around her. Though she was born in Saudia Arabia, AlSaud lives in New York City and splits her time between the two places. She explores the effects of censorship in Saudia Arabia by contrasting the highly controlled images of the region (such as blurred faces on billboards) with her work. AlSaud creates line drawings of the subjects in her photographs that exclude recognizable details like faces and skin, which she then etches back into her negatives and prints again. This self-censorship recalls photography’s ability to blur public and private, a subject she explores further in large-format negatives that are etched in the pattern of Islamic screens that separate private and public spaces.
