(55.8 x 46 cm)
Doyle kindly thanks Annette Bourrut Lacouture for confirming the authenticity of this work, which she states is very characteristic of the artist's style in the 1860s. The painting will be included in her forthcoming Catalogue Raisonne of Jules Breton.
Condition: Glue relined; dirty, yellowed varnish; light scattered craquelure. Some spots of inpainting in the woman's neck and cap. 1 1/2 inch line of inpainting in the upper left corner. Difficult to detect restoration under uv light through the dulling varnish. The signature and date in brown may been been strengthened by another hand.
Signature: Signed Jules Breton and dated twice 1860 (lr)
