Addressing the impact of technology on human identity, Justin Bower creates fractured portraits of people with emotionless expressions. He crafts the appearance of digital glitches by doubling, erasing, and blurring faces, suggesting that technology is integral to each subject’s being. Bower is both bothered and fascinated by technology, particularly forms that confound autonomy and individuality, or ones that quantify humans, such as genome-mapping. Although he is influenced by Willem de Kooning’s painterly strokes and portraits by Douglas Gordon and Chuck Close, Bower cites Leonardo da Vinci as his greatest inspiration. He admires the Renaissance artist’s standardization of the human form and his systematic way of seeing.
