Karen Schiff, ‘Untitled (Word Totems)’, 2012, CMA: Benefit Auction 2017

Framed.

Karen Schiff
Karen Schiff’s richly colored works on paper directly reference the 15th century illuminated manuscript Belles Heures commissioned by Jean de Berry, the subject of a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Schiff has utilized the basic format of each page, extracting and reconfiguring abstract ornamental elements within the illustrations. By eliminating the figurative components from the original images, she extends their spiritual content into a more universal realm, recalling other artistic traditions, including Persian and Indian miniatures. Karen Schiff was born in New Haven, CT. She received a BA/MA degree from Brown University in 1989, a MA/PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998; and a MFA in studio art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University in 2006. Schiff lives and works in New York, NY, and has exhibited widely across the U.S.
