Karl-Johan Hjerling, ‘"Walnut Frank" + "Deposit Boxes"’, 2015, Chamber

A piece that aims to highlight the purity of craftsmanship and construction, “Walnut Frank” consists of a transparent acrylic casing through which the frame, joinery, fittings and construction elements are visible. The transparent cupboard provides viewers an unexpected way of experiencing a piece of furniture that is typically meant to store and hide objects from the view. The acrylic upper cabinet portion has been crafted as if it were wood by implementing a dovetailing technique, a classic method of wood joinery. Its base and frame are constructed of Austrian walnut, lending a subtle elegance and a solid, contemporary finish to the piece.
