About Karl Maughan
Although Karl Maughan's hyperreal depictions of fauna and wilderness were once painted among lush gardens en plein air, Maughan eventually found the changing variables of his outdoor New Zealand environment to be unconducive to his practice. After a stint living in a studio in a barren neighborhood of London—where he was forced to outsource his colorful flowers and open spaces—Maughan maintained an archive of gardens on film. This allowed him to manipulate the elements of his landscapes, carefully piecing together and transposing idyllic arrangements and leaving out any sign of wilt or decomposition. The resulting images are surreal, fantastical narratives, rendered in an oil painting technique that variously recalls the Impressionists and the thick, painterly style of Expressionism.
