Karl Scheid’s Atomic Vase takes the shape of a nuclear mushroom cloud, the flat bottom of the work turning at a right angle and forming a half circle that balances precariously on a small, rounded foot. The two rounded faces of this half-circle vase meet at a seam so that the piece is much wider than it is deep. A geometric design of parallel and perpendicular lines, interesting in and of itself for its asymmetrical regularity, is made further remarkable in its complementary palette of navy blue and burnt orange.
