In her video animations, Katarina Löfström constructs a language of light and color that suggests a painterly understanding of the moving image. The artist’s videos are abstract renderings of the natural world; she translates elements such as light into pixels of color, evoking a midcentury mode of abstraction that sought to elicit emotions through formal properties. Flickering patterns and optical effects are of particular interest to the artist, who explores how these patterns cause sensations in viewers. Although her practice is grounded in moving images, Löfström also creates two-dimensional collages, photographs, and sculptures, which extrapolate the concerns of her videos into static, physical objects.
