Kate Petley, ‘This Pale Afternoon’, Robischon Gallery

About Kate Petley

Kate Petley channels midcentury American abstraction in gestural paintings that trade conventional materials for industrial ones. Petley applies resin and mixed media on monochrome or multicolor aluminum or acrylic sheets, in colorful, direct markings or drips evocative of Abstract Expressionism. Petley’s use of metals and acrylic as canvases lends the work a gloss and slickness that distinguishes her compositions from their historical forebears. Likewise, the use of resin, used by post-minimalist figures such as Eva Hesse, marks a departure from the flatness of painting, placing the works in conversation with sculpture.
