Kati Elm playfully, and with carefree abandon, creates her artworks by using different sources and a combination of tradition and the current zeitgeist. The artworks transcend time and make us understand with a bit of humor the times we live in now. The result of these components is colorful, striking, timeless imagery which is designed to provide the viewer stimulation, expansion, as well as intense amusement.
This 8 inch square artwork is ready to hang. The 1 inch depth gives it a sculptural effect. It can also be placed on a shelf, desk, counter or table. Kati Elm cuts the wood for each of her artworks in her studio and applies a layer of white paint as the base. She then sands the edges to give it a unique finish. She applies imagery, paint and papers on the front and sides and signs and dates the artwork on the back. Free shipping within Los Angeles and Continental US. Affordable global shipping is available. A certificate of authenticity is included.
Kati Elm is inspired by reminders of past decades. She often uses graphics from recycled print materials from the 1930s to 1960s, such as advertisements, East German school books as well as comic books, recycled magazines, children’s storybooks and fairy tales. She gives these historic references a new life, creating artworks that interweave history and makes them relevant today.
Kati Elm operates her own workshop and atelier in Berlin, Germany. Kati creates each artwork from scratch, starting out by cutting the wood and assembling it. An individual and unique personality and soul is crafted into each artwork with the application of imagery and acrylic paint.
Elm’s work is influenced by her experience in fashion, tailoring, fabrics and design. Her artworks express her critical view of fashion and consumption and how the two are often inseparable.
Her creative career began in the world of fashion and fabric design. She experimented with her own ideas and tailored them into reality, but wasn’t satisfied with the limitations in this field. Her urge to more freedom in expressing her creativity led to painting, drawing and finally realizing that small format wood artworks would be her preferred medium, reflecting what moves and touches her.
Since 2009 Kati Elm has exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair Los Angeles, Seattle and New York, and continues to exhibit at various galleries in Germany and Switzerland as well as Artspace Warehouse, Los Angeles.
