The collaboration of Katie Stout and Sean Gerstley combines the former’s flair for bright colors and strong forms with the latter’s distinct handmade ceramics. Stout, a Brooklyn-based artist and designer, often works with collaborators, such as Gerstley, whose ceramics recall the meticulousness and medium-bending work of Ron Nagle. In their collaborative lamps, Gertsley molds clay into geometric outlines or shaped mounds conceived by Stout. Gertsley’s fingerprints leave a trace of the maker, while bright, monochromatic glazes lend the work a cheerful and pop sensibility. The absence of a shade further distances the lamps from any notion of classical design. “I want my work to make people happy,” Stout has said.
