For more than a decade, KAWS has been the leading practitioner of the American post-pop underground, producing paintings, drawings, and sculptures that employ a cast of familiar characters drawn from popular culture who serve to break down barriers that separate “high” and “low” culture, art, and life. To that point, KAWS’s work is populated by several well-known cartoon characters who the artist has transformed into his own characters with X-ed out eyes, as if in a trance. His character in SEEING (Pink) is named BFF, suggesting the friendship and companionship that imaginary characters can provide. The sculpture SEEING (Pink) also serves as a lamp. When BFF’s eyes are illuminated, the character provides a comforting sense of presence while conveying the inner awareness of artistic vision.
