This is a, historic one-of-a-kind unique, original hand signed drawing on a rare invitation card to Haring's exhibition of recent work at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery on Mercer Street. It is signed to the right of the drawing in black marker by Keith Haring with his trademark copyright. This drawing is a self portrait - as it is to the left of a photograph of 12 year old Keith Haring in Kutztown, Pennsylvania taken by the artist's father, Allen R. Haring. On the verso of the drawing is the exhibition announcement for Haring's Recent Work from December 3 1988 to January 7 1989 at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, 161 Mercer Street, New York City.

This work has fine provenance: its from the Estate and private autograph collection of Cordelia Platt - a friend of Haring's. Highly regarded in the autograph industry, Cordelia was the president of the UACC (United Autograph Collectors Club) and a well known dealer for many years. She was official authenticator of Marilyn Monroe. This piece was in Ms. Platt's private collection for 20 years before it was sold.

About Keith Haring

Bridging the gap between the art world and the street, Keith Haring rose to prominence in the early 1980s with his graffiti drawings made in the subways and on the sidewalks of New York City. Combining the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists like Jean DuBuffet, Haring developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic centered on fluid, bold outlines against a dense, rhythmic overspread of imagery like that of babies, barking dogs, flying saucers, hearts, and Mickey Mouse. In his subway drawings and murals, Haring explored themes of exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and rising fears of nuclear holocaust, which became increasingly apocalyptic after his AIDS diagnosis. Alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer, Haring is regarded as a leading figure in New York East Village Art scene in the 1970s and '80s.
