Kris Knight is known for his absorbing portraits of androgynous subjects who hover between adolescence and adulthood. Knight’s visual language is indebted to romanticism, symbolism, and fantasy; his characters come from both real life and stories he makes up. “I care most about the story,” he has said. “I see myself as a storyteller who makes images.” The artist sources his color palette from 18th-century French portraiture, using lush primary hues and sensual pastels. Drawn to his unique sense of color, Gucci creative director Frida Giannini collaborated with Knight on two of the fashion label’s collections in 2015.
