Among the many things that disturb me about the current occupant of the Whitehouse and his administration are the racist statements, policies and attacks taking place. Specifically the abuse of immigrants and children under the practice of family separation and mass detention of migrants has been agonizing (as a mother and human being) to see. I have been unable to keep it out of my work although I feel an immense pressure of wanting to do justice to the intense wrong I am witnessing with work that is as sincere and excellent as I can make it. But at the same time I have to try. So protests and fences and barbed wire are working their way into my paintings. I struggle to balance my bright color palette with the bleakness of this moment so that is something I am working out and struggling with right now. I am also interested in exploring the tension I often feel as a person who is sensitive to noise and bright light, living in a loud, bright, urban environment... so those things work their way in as well. In terms of aesthetics it is important to me to have a lot of variation in my mark making and to convey a certain anxiety, energy or pressure with these current works. I'm still working that out too.
