About Kristina Lee

Kristina Lee’s paintings feature adapted film stills from action and horror movies, particularly ones featuring women engaged in intense physical activities such as fighting or fleeing. “Watching video and looking at video stills allowed me to focus on specific actions that represent the kind of movement I’m interested in, which is very physical, yet choreographed and graceful,” she explains. By translating moving images into still paintings, Lee distills compositional elements into bold forms and heightens the visual impact. The emotional resonances in Lee’s paintings recall German expressionism, and her work reflects the influence of such diverse artists as Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring, and Juan Uslé.
