About Larissa Strunowa

In Larissa Strunowa’s vibrant paintings, abstract and figurative components are held in tension. Her expressive, muscular nude figures exude libidinal energy in their erotically forward poses and expressions, but the ebullient juxtaposition and application of colors suggests a more complicated psychic dimension that positions the compositions along a spectrum of turmoil and ecstasy. The obfuscation of Strunowa’s figures by abstract swaths of color and loose line belies her technical mastery of the human body—seen especially in her drawings—where the nude is rendered with the precision of a classical sculptor or Renaissance painter.
