Laura Letchinger is a contemporary artist living in Los Angeles who creates large abstract paintings with an urban industrial, minimalist, street or pop art edge. Her works are acrylic on canvas, often combined with other mediums such as pastel, graphite, crayon and collage.
“Free from thinking about the past, the future, or even the present mark being made in front of me, a unique internal space exists into which creative energy can flow,” says Letchinger. “I might have a certain intention or feeling as I paint, but I find making art to be the most interesting and exciting when this creative energy manifests in the physical world unfiltered by the mind. As a piece nears completion thoughts often do appear; I see patterns in the image and consider how to develop them. But because so much of even that process is intuitive rather than analytical, when I look at a finished painting I don’t really feel it’s something that I, in particular, made. This magical, magnetic experience of being and discovery continually pulls me to the studio to see what comes up next.”
Laura is self-taught. Drawings, cartoons, calligraphy, and countless chalk murals were a huge part of her childhood. She can easily remember the feel of chalk moving across the giant board in her basement and the way the falling dust looked as it drifted through the light from the window. Years ago Laura lived in an old Chicago window shade factory and was immediately drawn to the aesthetic of big art in an industrial space. She loves working large.
For a long time, thinking and critical analysis occupied most of Letchinger’s energy. She studied pre-med and psychology in college, counseling psychology as a grad student and juggled logistics and storytelling while she made videos for nonprofits. It was her early experience as a distance runner that first provided her full access to the zen-like state of “no-thinking.” Connectedness to a creative life force seems to provide buoyancy to body and spirit. As intuition is heightened, the analytical mind evaporates and actions are informed from a knowing rather than deciding. For Laura all is one, all is timeless, and all is as it is.
