Laurel Roth examines the consequences of the human drive to self-modify and alter the environment in assemblages, carvings, woven tapestries, and knits. She is perhaps best known for her intricately and painstakingly constructed sculptures of birds—extinct and extant—made from found domestic objects like paperclips, yarn, fake fingernails, and Swarovski crystals. These birds, as in Regalia (2011), placed on hand-carved wooden bases, reflect the artist’s concern with adaptations gone awry, modifications to the body that obstruct natural selection, and society’s obsession with the cosmetic.
