About Laurent de Brunhoff

Author and illustrator Laurent de Brunhoff has kept Babar—beloved king of the elephants and city sophisticate—alive for more than 60 years. The creation of his parents, Babar was born in 1931 out of his mother’s bedtime stories, which his father, Jean de Brunhoff, illustrated and published to immediate acclaim. De Brunhoff was 13 when the mantle was passed to him by his father’s death. Though he began his artistic career as a modern painter, he soon turned to continuing the story of Babar and his family full-time and has produced 37 books detailing their adventures. “Our family has always lived with Babar,” he writes, “our lives are intertwined with his. […] I myself have never tired of drawing Babar or felt anything but grateful to my father for giving me both my life's work and my life's companion.”
