Apprehensive to painting in the traditional sense, Lavialle Campbell approaches geometric abstraction through the use of quilted thread and cotton, rejecting western-based art-making materials, and aligning her self with processes historically associated with “women's work”, all the while challenging the very
idea of what a painting can be. Through this approach, Campbell's works attain a certain zen – her formal interests in Modernism, Japanese Minimalism, and contemporary architecture working simultaneously in support of her non-representational quilted abstractions.
In The Shadows is a new body of works that address the dark and shadowy spaces that are endured within a lifetime of illness, while at the same time discovering the resilience and potential for beauty within those shadows.
