About Lee Wells

Lee Wells is a multidisciplinary artist whose work focuses on issues of control and the systems that support it. Working in video, painting, and drawing, Wells depicts traumatic situations and their victims or perpetrators, and figures of Middle Eastern or American descent, reflecting on recent wars and conflicts. His gray-scale works show figures that gaze out at the viewer, many from behind masks or head coverings. In his series "Abstract Painting with Gunshot," the artist works with a small range of colors, layering them onto the canvas with abrupt brushstrokes. The abstract forms are interrupted by gaping holes in the canvas resembling bullet holes, which teem with canvas threads, upsetting the otherwise meditative paintings with suggestions of violence and destruction.
