About Leena Nio
Leena Nio’s oil paintings change appearance depending on the viewer’s position, formally reflecting differences in interpretation and perspective. The viewer’s movement is thus an integral part of Nio’s work. She makes use of traditional subject matter—such as portraiture and still life—but experiments with the materiality of paint, creating a range of impressions in a single canvas. Opposite events occur simultaneously in her paintings; for example, the lace of a shirt is tied-up and undone; a mask is put on and removed. Several realities exist at once, eliciting themes of isolation and unity.
