About Lena Johansson

Lena Johansson takes readily available commercial imagery and translates it into richly detailed, intimate oil paintings with a focus on interior scenes. The Malmö-based artist does not plan her compositions in advance; instead she works directly from the photographic source, allowing changes as the images pass through her hand onto the canvas. This process results in subtle shifts in mood that alter the character of the original image. “A photograph is like any other thing. I feel free to interpret what I see,” the artist has said. “I don’t project, and outline directly with color when constructing a painted work.”
