Lester Monzon’s paintings revolve around a central tension that reflects the respective concerns of Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism: the relationship between rigidity and free expression. Monzon considers these two approaches as parallel influences within his work. In acrylic on linen, he places rigid patterns and repetitive structures beneath free-flowing gestures. Against the formal rigor of the patterned background, his loose brushstrokes introduce a principle of impurity that clashes with the underlying structure. To explain his work, he makes an inventive comparison: it is like “a government building,” he says, “and it’s completely put together, then a month later some tagger comes along and puts his mark on there.”
