About Li Huasheng 李华生
For decades, Li Huasheng has been considered one of China’s leading traditional ink painters. Schooled in the Chinese painting tradition, Li produced elegant ink landscapes. Since the 1980s, he has departed from his early landscape style and moved toward abstraction. In his monumental and non-representational ink-on-paper works, Li focuses on line, repeating grids and marks in such a way that his images retain the meditative quality of traditional Chinese paintings. Works such as 0305 (2003), an enormous work on Xuan paper comprised of finely applied gray ink grids, meditate on the passing of time.
