ARTIST STATEMENT:
This series of paintings was inspired by my travels to Guanacaste, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a spectacular country, replete with natural wonders, and the skies are full of birds. Mounded islets covered with hairy, gnarly trees dot the coastline. The stork in this painting is an avatar of good fortune and abundance in mythology and culture. Although a bit clumsy on land, these huge birds glide in flight, soaring effortlessly through the air.
The introspective girls and women in my paintings make us ask, “What are they thinking?” Their placement in such lush, enigmatic settings questions, “Why are we here?”
