Linden Frederick
American, b. 1953
Follow

A palpable stillness and quietude emanate from Linden Frederick’s depictions of rural and suburban settings. Framed by expansive colored skies, his paintings of homes, trailer parks, motels, and depressed roadside establishments capture an intense atmosphere of solitude, reminiscent of the work of Edward Hopper. The glow of a lit window in a home at night or an ornamental garden sculpture in a backyard imply human presence, though figures never appear. Despite this, Frederick explains, “My work is not about place. It is really about people.” Having grown up in Perth, New York, with a population of just 60, Frederick draws on an intimate communion with his subject.
