American, b. 1958

Lisa Nankivil explains that she developed her hallmark stripe motif through painting backdrops in figural works: “I was searching for ways to make the background as essential as the image,” she says. Nankivil’s works draw inspiration from American and European traditions of abstraction, though they take one of John Berger’s axioms as a direct point of departure—that “Home is where the vertical meets the horizontal.” Her compositions feature vertical or horizontal lines, and sometimes the two in conjunction; within these strict parameters, Nankivil paints with great variation with respect to color, strength, and gradation. Though not representational, many of these works and their palettes are inspired by landscapes, in particular those of the American west.
