About Loren Munk

Since establishing his studio in New York in 1979, Loren Munk has focused his practice on its art scene, meticulously tracing its history and interconnections in his paintings, writings, and videos. Focused on process and materials in his early work, he produced mixed-media paintings as part of the Kitsch Art and New York Neo-Expressionism movements. In the mid-1990s, he created the persona “James Kalm” and entered the artistic discourse as a critic, writer, and videographer. He has published hundreds of articles and posted an equal number of videos to his two YouTube channels, “The James Kalm Report” and “James Kalm Rough Cut.” These projects led Munk to his current, celebrated work: colorful, jam-packed diagrams of the art world and art history, whose logic, as he describes, comes from “Ad Reinhardt’s quip ‘All art comes from art and nothing else.’”
