In her fantastical compositions, Lori Field’s subjects—humans hybridized with animals or otherwise distorted—play out ambiguous narratives. Field’s artistic process is impossibly intricate and labor-intensive: she begins by painting several layers of encaustic, an ancient method using pigmented wax, then works the surface with tools to produce textures and variously reveal the colors of each layer. Finally, Field lays down impeccable colored-pencil drawings on rice paper, sealing them in with further layers of encaustic. “An obsession with obsessiveness is a common thread in all my work,” she says. Field culls her imagery entirely from her own imagination, claiming that her works are narratives of a subconscious story, one that is felt more than understood: “The reoccurring characters and symbols also tell a psychological story, perhaps my own.”
