Louise Belcourt merges landscape with cityscape in abstract color block paintings of cubes and mounds. While abstract, the simple and bright shapes are representative of the hedges, mountains and seascapes that inspired them. Dominated by crisp blues and greens, a work might be equally descriptive of the rural Canadian village that Belcourt visits, or the view from her New York City window of roofs and apartment buildings. The paintings are charming and soothing, with a buoyant artificiality that is surreal, yet relatable. Describing her works as “paintings of sculptures of landscapes,” Belcourt hopes that the paintings, and their use of color, “will produce light, space and the feeling of hope (goodness, elegance, rightness of purpose).”
