About Louise Despont

With “a particular interest in cosmologies—esoteric and metaphysical,” as she describes, Louise Despont uses drawing as meditation on the intersection of the intellectual and the spiritual. Using architectural stencils and compasses, she draws intricate, poetic compositions on Raj-era British-Indian graph paper ledgers, chosen for their depth of color and fragility. Her geometric and floral designs in warm-toned graphite and watercolor draw on Indian, ancient Buddhist, and architectural motifs, forming an abstract language of symbols. “The patterns represent internal forms, directional movement, and radiating energies,” Despont explains. Described as fantastic yet rigorously contained, her work has drawn comparisons to Precisionists like A. G. Rizzoli and Adolf Wolfli.
