About Lucien Murat
Influenced by graphic novels and the American golden age of comics, French artist Lucien Murat creates absurdist historical and political landscapes. “I create uncomfortable combinations between historical and contemporary popular references (9/11, the French Revolution, Iwo Jima Battle, English Royalty, Napoleon etc.),” he writes. “I employ flattened-out heroes, incapable of saving the world and who end up in absurd situations letting humanity sink into cartoon violence and ill conceived battles.” Murat creates drawings, sculptures, and elaborate collages in which he explores the possibilities of humor for sparking social and political discourse. He sets his practice in dialogue with European traditions of tapestry making and history painting.
