Luiz Zerbini, ‘Joaninha [Ladybug]’, 1996, Instituto Tomie Ohtake

About Luiz Zerbini

One of the most respected contemporary artists in Latin America, Luiz Zerbini produces paintings, sculptures, and installations layered with a mash-up of images and witty references to art history and pop culture. The grid—an artistic leitmotif often associated with modernism and Minimalism—runs throughout all of Zerbini’s works as a visual and conceptual backbone. It is overlaid onto or incorporated into his lush, textured landscapes and seascapes, formed out of old slide frames, or suggested by his sculptural arrangements of tubes and shelving.
