About Luke Achterberg

Luke Achterberg is a sculptor who draws his inspiration from customized cars and hot-rods, and the graffiti and street art that were touchstones of his childhood. Hailing from a family of welders and automobile customizers, Achterberg studied both fine arts and technical welding before beginning his MFA program. He identifies with these counter- and subcultural sensibilities, which he believes “display extremely high technical values outside of academia.” His body of work is comprised of freestanding and wall-mounted painted steel sculptures, and ceramic works. These characteristically feature sleek forms, aerodynamic lines, and glossy finishes—a combined style he has come to refer to as “SuperSleek.”
