Mack Magagane (b.1990, Soweto, South Africa), following his matriculation in 2008, joined the Market Photo Workshop where he explored an artistic interest in architectural design and drawing through photography.
Since then Magagane’s trajectory as a young photographer has been concerned with the elusive urban landscape of Johannesburg as a central motif and more recently he has been focused on the intimate in the seemingly private and personal spaces he encounters and occupies.
His first solo exhibition was at the Photo Workshop Gallery, Johannesburg, with a series of work titled …in this city. This work was produced during his 2011/12 Tierney Fellowship at the Market Photo Workshop. In 2011, he was invited to the 2011 Photoquai Biennale in Paris with a body of work titled, “I’ll be gone soon…" in which he recreates intimate stereotypical and familiar suicidal imagery of moments before one commits suicide, in view of increased suicidal deaths in South Africa over the past years.
Magagane has exhibited at the FNB Joburg Art Fair 2011, 2012-2015 and received the 2011 ACT ImpACT Award within the field of Visual Art in South Africa. He has shown the body of works, "Light Hours" and "...in this city" in mid 2013 at the Present Tense group exhibition; was part of the Next Future programme at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, Portugal, which also traveled to Paris, opening at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Delegation in France.
In 2013 Mack participated in a residency at Centre Photographique d’Île-de-France in Paris, France, which was part of the French - South Africa season. He exhibited the body of work titled "Southern Suburbia" during his stay in Paris as an invited artist at YGREC gallery and "…in this city" in Strasbourg, France; also part of the French - South Africa season in France 2013 in COMMITMENT #1. As part of his residency at the Photographique d’Île-de-France, Paris, France as part of the French - South Africa season in France, he produced "Somewhere between Here", which was shown at ROOM in 2014. Here he entertains a sense of nostalgia in being in a foreign space that of Paris and the reference of home, Johannesburg. Longing for, exploring and questioning an identity of 'place'.
In 2015, Magagane had his 2nd Solo exhibition with ROOM Gallery and Projects titled "Existential" consisting of his latest body of work titled "Chapter V" (September 2015) and notably later in the year, was part of the curated Tierney Fellow exhibition titled Against Time presented at Bamako Encounters, African Biennale for Photography.
Magagane lives and continues to work in Johannesburg, South Africa.
