Mahony, ‘The remarkable absence of violet’, 2016, Galerie Emanuel Layr

Saintpaulias, known as African Violets, native to Tanzania and eastern tropical Africa have become a very common household indoor plant in Europe. Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire, a district commissioner in a province that belongs to the now Tanzania, discovered the plant in 1892 and sent seeds back to Germany. In the USA the breeding and cultivation of this plant led to a vast variety of forms and colors.
