In candid scenes of youth culture in 1960s Bamako and intimate studio portraits, Malick Sidibé’s photographs capture ordinary life with style and verve. For the duration of his half-century career Sidibé worked out of the Bamako photo studio he opened in 1962, saying, “Whenever there was a dance, I was invited.” Sidibé documented a period of national birth in Mali following the end of French colonial rule with a fresh, joyful perspective of modern West-African life. Though well-established in Mali, Sidibé’s work was not internationally recognized until the 1990s, when he gained both critical acclaim and widespread popularity, earning recognition as the first African and first photographer to win the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2007 Venice Biennale.
