This etching is part of the illustrated book "Les Fables de La Fontaine", comprising 102 etchings, commissioned by publisher and dealer Ambroise Vollard to Marc Chagall in 1927. Chagall engraved the works at that time, but the edition was completed by Tériade, with his Editions Verve in 1952.
The volume was published in 200 examples, numbered and hand-signed by Chagall only in the the colophon while each single engraving was signed in the plate.
