Marc Chagall was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard to illustrate the ”Fables” by Jean de La Fontaine in 1927. The 100 etchings were finished in 1930 but they were printed and edited only in 1952. The edition of the unsigned etchings together with text in two volumes was 200.
100 albums of the 100 etchings were printed on bigger Montval paper (42 x 34 cm). These etchings are signed in pencil and numbered from 1 to 100 in the same order as in the book.
