About Marcel Wanders

Marcel Wanders’s subversive, often humorous designs combine the innovative with the commonplace. The Knotted Chair (1995), his best-known work, was the product of a collaboration with Delft Technical University’s aviation department. The chair blends a familiar construction technique, macramé, with technologically advanced materials typically used in aerospace. To produce the chair, hand-knotted, heat-resistant synthetic fibers are draped over a mold, injected with epoxy resin and then dried into shape. The result is an imaginative, lightweight, and durable design that appears to defy physics.
